meet the counselor:

Danielle Zecker-Hannon is passionate about using creative arts, movement and nature as a vehicle to help kids navigate challenging socio-emotional issues. Danielle is a NH Licensed School Counselor and a Registered Dance/Movement Therapist. She completed her Master’s degree in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling Psychology from Antioch University in 2006.

She has worked with Elementary, Middle and High school students in NH as a Creative Arts Therapist and as a director of a Student Assistance Program. She is also a certified Yoga and Pilates teacher, and currently teaches at Plymouth State University and Synergy Dance School. In addition to counseling and teaching, Danielle is a dance choreographer, creating dances and teaching master classes for students across NH and beyond.

Her love of Nature and the outdoors runs deep as well, as Danielle was an outdoor educator for many years before having children and is still a Registered Maine Guide. Danielle has three daughters (two are still at MVCS and one is a recent graduate), and she loves to garden, hike, ski and find quiet meditation time outside. Danielle is at MVCS 12 hours/week and really enjoys being part of the MVCS team!!

faq

what does an ssp counselor do?

The SSP counselor works alongside teachers and parents to help students develop socially and emotionally, and to help remove any barriers they may have to learning.

how does a student connect with an ssp counselor?

A teacher, school administrator, or other staff member can refer a student for counseling. In addition, a parent or guardian, a friend, or the student can also make a referral to the SSP counselor. Please use this 1:1 Counseling Referral form. Please note that our SSP Counselor is only at MVCS for 12 hours per week, so if a student's need is greater than available services, an outside counseling referral will be made. A list of Outside Counselors, in our surrounding area, is below.

what types of things do students and the ssp counselor talk about?

The SSP Counselor talks with students about the issues that affect their daily lives, both in and out of the classroom. By proactively teaching and talking about a variety of topics, the counselor helps children to better cope with life's experiences and expectations. The counselor works with students on common issues such as:

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.
— Maya Angelou

how does the ssp help parents and families?

The SSP counselor can help you address any social or emotional concerns you may have about your child and help improve parent-child communication. Part of growing up includes many developmental changes that occur throughout childhood; if questions arise, the counselor can help walk you through your concerns and provide help if necessary. If family difficulties or concerns are affecting your child at school, the counselor can help you address these issues. In addition, the counselor can provide referrals to community resources for additional outside help.
